The Most Valuable Commodity
The most valuable commodity is not oil, gold, diamonds or any other precious metal or natural resource. It is information. Information is in our hands every day at every moment. It has never been easier in human history to have access to so much information as it is today.
Information used to be a much cherished commodity guarded in big libraries behind dogmas, walls and misconceptions. Now, with the advancements of technology and communication information is commonplace. In fact, there is so much information within our reach today that we consciously learn to shut ourselves off from it.
Think for a second. By the time you leave your house in the morning till the time you enter your office building. Just count how many times you were bombarded with information ranging from news to advertisements and so many other facts that you would wish not to have heard. We have learnt to reject this continuous onslaught fervently to remain sane and maintain a small piece of our consciousness for ourselves.
Then consider how much money companies spend on information gathering. As marketing says it a bulk of information is useless unless organized in a meaningful pattern. This is what is called marketing intelligence. This is the holly grail for any marketer. Knowing on time who your customer is and what he wants. Just consider the billions every year on customer and marketing research.
Another institution greatly interested in information is national government. The scariest of the scariest public agencies are the intelligence agencies whose main job is to collect information. Think about the CIA, FSB and Mossad. Think about spies and industrial espionage.
Then, let’s take a look back on the last 5o years. Consider totalitaristic regimes such as the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy where information was a major weapon used to brainwash and manipulate whole nations and that led to millions of lives lost. Unfortunately, the unlimited power of information control is still used today. The UN rates North Korea as the country with the strictest control of information today.
